The Penultimate Post

TODAY'S STRIP
And so it is all ending tomorrow, as our country begins anew.

The folly of 'Prickly City' has always been the fact it was created at the height of modern-day GOP power and Scott Stantis used this 'comic' vehicle as a propaganda piece to complain about 'liberals' and Democrats.

Scott's voice wasn't a vital counterpoint in a political and cultural argument. Instead, his voice was a non-stop Nyah-Nyah-Nyah-Nyah-Nyah chorus of boobosity.

It was offensive.

(Plus, you know, the strip was unfunny. And his drawing style sucked.)

But it's a different world starting tomorrow. We're the opposite of Scott Stantis. We don't gloat. We know when to fight, but more importantly, we know when to sit back and just be.

It's time for us to just be.

As previously mentioned, I'm sure the three of us will still check in every now and again on the strip. (Unfortunately, it's still in my morning paper; I have no choice.) We'll comment at gocomics from time-to-time. We still like to stir shit up.

Thanks to all who have visited over the years. Thanks to all who have commented to remind us that, yes, a handful of people do check in with the site.

A personal thanks to my compatriots Sacki and The Furnace. I could not have made it past three months without them.

See you in the funny pages!

How will I go on without this blog?

Just fine, I suppose. I'll miss the snarking, though. Farewell to all of you guys. Your job is done and (as Edward James Olmos said in Blade Runner) you all did a man's job here. Lets just hope Obama lives up to even a quarter of our hopes and expectations.

Goodbye, Shrubville. Goodbye, Pres. Bush. I'll miss at least one of you when you're gone.

Thanks CJo. Does this mean I don't have to post tomorrow? :) But seriously - it's been awesome. And thanks to the readers and commenters - even the Russian ones.

Come on, don't you love how Scottie weaseled out of drawing the Reverend Doctor's face? Come on! You all cannot leave!

I can't believe Stantis actually planned two weeks ahead to do a MLK strip.
Are Carmen and Winslow still in DC? Because, while a MLK memorial is planned there, it does not actually exist yet.

I'm confused by this particular strip, I must admit. Is Stantis saying that MLK is an American hero who is smiling about Obama's accomplishment, or is he trashing MLK as a no-goodnik liberal who supported the guy that beat John McCain? I mean, with most cartoonists this would pretty plainly be the former, but with Stantis you never know.

It is tragic that Shrubville shuts its doors while "Prickly City" goes on, but it makes sense, in a strange way. Shrubville has been able to spend the last 4-5 years on the attack, with Republicans in power and Stantis plaguing the comics pages. But now, with Obama taking office and the Democrats firmly in control of the 111th U.S. Congress, ironically, as CJo pointed out, now Stantis can finally do what he set out to do -- make fun of the liberals in power. It's weird, if you think about it...why would a conservative strip making fun of the liberals in power launch in 2004, a year when the Republicans were solidly in power of all three branches of government? Typical Stantis, I suppose.

I don't want to be overly verbose in saying farewell, but just let me say that I will miss reading Shrubville each day. I'll miss the analytical humor of the Furnace, the sharp wit of CJo, the off-the-wall weirdness of Sacki, the occasional lunacy in the comments section, and the fact that the degree to which Stantis has sucked over the past four-and-a-half years was being documented each day. And I must commend the three of you for having the strength to keep up with all this for so long. I couldn't bear to write about this sorry excuse for a comic strip for more than four months, let alone four years.

Thanks for the good times, you guys.

"A personal thanks to my compatriots Sacki and The Furnace. I could not have made it past three months without them."

Oh yeah, way to go out on a high note and blame it all on me and The Furnace. Real classy.

Sadly, I'm starting to come to terms with the fact that this blog is going away... no shrub in the White House, no need for Shrubville.

I found this blog accidentally, almost when it first started, when I looked around to see if anyone else thought Stantis was a complete idiot. I almost never had anything to add to what Furnace, CJo, and Sacki wrote. You guys are like superheroes of the blogosphere... (Who are you? What's your day job? Does anyone know your secret identity?)

To Furnace, CJO, Sacki, all the semi-regular comment-adders (and maybe the Russians and Ron Paul spambots too), thank you very much for a wonderful couple of years. I'm going to miss all the wit, wisdom, and well-informed rants.

agreed, tomorrow is a very bittersweet day. gotta love Obama getting inaugurated, gotta feel bad about Shrubville moving on to a happy hunting ground. I'll miss this blog for sure.

I'll echo Johnny O: now that Shrubville is ending, you have to tell us: What the hell are your day jobs?

Thanks for the laughs. and the seriolus political commentary. but especially the laughs.

cheers from New Jersey,
Snowman
