TODAY'S STRIP

It occured to me while looking over today's comic strip that Prickly City is syndicated by "Universal Press Syndicate, Inc." That leads me to believe that, despite our big heads and best intentions, we may not be and may never have been the intended audience for smelling what he's cooking.

There's an entire universe out there for which the (seemingly, to us) nonsensical ramblings make perfect sense. The man in the moon, for instance - what do you think he's smiling about? The wit and wisdom of Prickly City, of course. And we don't want to piss off the moon of Earth, do we? Tidal waves tidaling, reading at night impossible, unpredictable menstruation - in a word, chaos!

And while we shall nevertheless continue to endeavor to find something to grab onto in the Prickly City comic strip, it makes you wonder....

Question of the day: instead of a moon, what does that thing Stantis draw in the sky look most like? I'm saying a wadded up piece of paper.

(*draws, not draw - sorry)

Posted by: The Furnace at December 13, 2007 01:00 PM

Looking at it again, I'm not torn between a used piece of spearmint gum and a stone.

Furnace,
My answer is that it actually looks sort of like a bunch of little microorganisms swimming around, like they look under a microscope. High school biology memories, anybody?

Sacki,
This post is really clever. Interesting thoughts.

I was wondering if it was supposed to be a hat that blew off of someone's head - but whose?

It first I was distracted by the horrible moon, but then I noticed that in the 2nd panel, Carmen has a beak.

The moon--it's that chair from "The Prisoner" series that No. 2 always sat in.

And, John? That's no beak. Think lower.

Deformed ashtray?

John and FredN --
Whatever it is, it looks horrible.

Since I didn't enter my guess in today's post, I'll state here that I believe it's the Ron Paul Blimp crashing to the ground after being taken down by the mysterious "PC Blimp" of earlier episodes.

Dear Mr. Stantis,

The phases of the moon are caused by the changing angle of sunlight falling upon the moon as it revolves around the Earth. I felt I need to remind you of this, since it's clear you believe that the moon literally gets eaten every month and that a crescent or half moon will show the inner-section of a partial sphere. Perhaps you think it's the work of some villain with a giant laser ray, as inspired by either Chairface Chippendale or the great Cobra Commander. Perhaps you believe a great cosmic wolf eats it every month, after which it is born anew. I'm afraid I must dispel this delusions.

In short, would you please stop drawing the moon to look like an apple with a bite taken out of it! A crescent moon with stars visible between the horns may have been an effective literary device when used in the "Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner," but you're no Samuel Coleridge.

Doc Sane,
Do you mean that "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" was not just a song by 80's metal legends, Iron Maiden?

Posted by: John at December 13, 2007 05:24 PM

John, "Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner" was a really long poem by Samuel Coleridge; it is directly quoted in the 13 minute Iron Maiden song that you're referring to.

Doc Sane, I think that Stantis is probably more interested in being artistic than being scientifically accurate, but because he has proved time and time again that he can't do the former, maybe he should look into attempting the latter.

Sacki, I always felt that the PC Blimp seemed vaguely dangerous...

Posted by: Chris at December 13, 2007 05:41 PM

You know, Stantis is free to be as artistic as he likes, but can't he try to do it well? Why must everything look so roughly-sketched and half-assed? Has he no shame? Can't he try to draw the moon so that it doesn't look like a half-deflated kick ball? Can't he draw Carmen and Winslow on model most of the time instead of merely occasionally? Can't he at least pretend to put some effort into his comic strip? If not, can he please clear the space for some young artist who gives a damn?
