Back to the Future of Europe
Ah, yes. What a nightmare a "European-style socialized medicine plan" would be. Can you imagine the long waits one would have to endure? Can you imagine the forms one would have to fill out?
Why try to fix a system that works so well?
As anyone who has been to the doctor in the last twenty years or so can attest, there is absolutely no. waiting. involved. There are no forms to fill out, neither at the doctor nor with the benevolent insurance carriers.
And let's not even talk about the monetary cost of it all. Because it's not relevant! At all!
In fact, I, myself, don't even have to go to the doctor's office. He comes to me. He pulls up to my house in a rusted-out Chevy. (His Porsche is in the shop.) At first, I was reluctant to let him treat me. He was from the big city -- Hollywood, in fact -- and he didn't seem to share my same folksy, small-town values. But once he won over old Dr. Hogue and then fell for our town sweetheart, Lou (a woman), I started to warm to him. Now he's one of my dearest friends as well as my doctor. And he doesn't charge me a dime.
I'd like to see THAT happen in France. Jamais, mes amis. Jamais.

So yesterday Stantis has Winslow complain about the long wait at the hospital - then today tries to say that he made it in likety-split? Which is it Stantis, it took him forever like yesterday or he had zero wait today? God he's a terrible writer. I really am starting to wonder if there are two people doing the strip now, because there's zero continuity from day to day.

Oh, by the way, I've NEVER experienced long lines at such privately-owned businesses like the grocery store, or the gas station, or fast food places. No no no - they're not government run, so I always just fly through and there's never any wait - just like Winslow today at the hospital. Yup, no waits whatsoever.
(Sorry, had to get that bit of sarcasm out of my system this morning.)

All privately run industries run effeciently - with no waiting or paperwork. Just call for cable TV service if you don't believe me. Or apply for a home equity loan. Why does
getting cured of a flesh-eating virus have to be more complicated than cancelling HBO and ShowTime?
We should privatize all government agencies. They would be run much better by the likes of Halliburton, and Blackwater USA.
(do I even need to mention the word "sarcasm"?)

In California, you can make an appointment for the DMV. And it's a real appointment, not a four-hour delivery window like at Sears.
Oh, wait, I'm sorry. Sears is a private company. That's why its appliance delivery folks are cheerful, efficient, helpful, and arrive within five minutes of their appointed time.
And what about those privatized airlines? Faboo, people, and always on time! No wait, no muss, no fuss.
Yes, the private sector is always better. And Scottie knows it. And so do all those people over 65, who are desperate to get out of Medicare and go back to private health insurance.

I forgot another nit-pick I have with today's strip. The DMV is not even a national agency. Each state has its own.

Stantis is definitely right today, because America's working class getting its medical coverage provided by the government is way worse than visiting the DMV.
(I hope that I will not have to mention sarcasm either.)
Seriously, though...The Furnace is absolutely right. Just yesterday, Winslow was complaining about how there were such long lines without universal healthcare (which doesn't make any sense), and today he's suddenly through right away. Stantis has continuity problems.
I was also wondering why Stantis was taken to a regular doctor and not a vet. And furthermore, has Stantis forgotten the original premise of the series. Why hasn't more of Winslow's flesh been eaten away? I know that his ass getting eaten by bacteria was an unbelievably bad story, but now Stantis is just going to forget that that ever happened so he can make nonsensical comments on healthcare? What is this, "Family Guy"?
I've got more to say, but it's already up over at Tumbleweedtown...

What the hell is going on in PC? This is all ridiculously bad and pointless.

Chris, you think STANTIS should be taken to a vet?
Posted by: Snowman at November 15, 2007 03:49 PM
Snowman,
Well that's kind of embarassing. No, I meant "Winslow" should be taken to the vet, not the real doctor. I don't know why I typed "Stantis."

I just find it amazing that Winslow can get to the doctor at all, since he's a coyote AND MOST LIKELY HAS NO INSURANCE. Think about that for a moment. Stantis is lecturing us about how terrible it would be to have universal health care while skipping over the real problem that Winslow would never be able to go to the hospital at all, since he has no money and no insurance. Hell, even Carmen would have trouble, now that Bush vetoed the S-CHIP extension.
Why is it that the guys like Stantis who rage on and on against "socialized medicine" live in a dream world where everyone just automatically gets medical treatment on demand? Scott, listen to me: I would love to live in a country where anyone, including the talking coyotes, can be admitted to a hospital without worry. The truth is, the real story here would be that Winston contracts his ass-eating infection, cannot get medical help, and then either dies or ends up saddled with hundreds of thousands of dollars to pay for whatever emergency treatment he can get.
Seriously, that's my question here. Who is paying for Winslow's treatment?

Where I come from, we shoot sick animals like that. Aint no vet or doc involved.
And I'm from Chicago!
Carry on nonsensically, Stantits.

Doc Sane, you're exactly right. Winslow has no insurance. That's the real problem with this storyline.
Hopefully Winslow's ass-eating infection will mutate and cross over to the general population of Prickly City, killing them all (Carmen and Kevin included, of course) and leaving the city as a ghost town.

Fascinating story in the WSJ today about the problems faced by people with insurance. Actually, it's not fascinating, it's what we already know. But for the WSJ to tackle the topic? That's the surprise, seeing as the paper is to the right of Stantis. (But it also does excellent reporting along the way, unlike Stantis.)
