Some Of 'Em Are Bitches
The Winslow/Trouble storyline (hopefully) ends with a thud today as Winston returns home to Prickly City, single and penniless. Apparently Winslow really did fall in love with her (I guess - Stantis is such a poor writer it's hard to tell) but more than anything he loved her money. Or something like that. Anywho, she didn't marry him and now Winslow's campaign for president is finished. At least I think it is since he's broke, but who knows with Prickly City since Stantis can just pull something out of his butt if he wants to keep that storyline going.
At this point I kind of feel like Media Matters when it comes to reporting what right wingers say. How many times can we point out how horrible Stantis is before we just give up and admit he's won? Stantis spent an entire week telling us how incredibly stupid Winslow is because he thought he had traveled to Iowa when in reality he was just on the other side of Prickly City. Now we're supposed to believe that Winslow made it all the way to New York to woo Trouble all by himself, AND made it back to PC without a problem?
The sad thing is, much like how conservatives are to President Bush, Stantis knows that Republicans will read his stuff and pretend to like it because he's a fellow Republican. They'll chuckle at today's strip because Winslow admits he really loved her money. Ha ha ha - he's a typical "limousine liberal" (but don't bring up that Trouble is obviously a rich bitch Republican whose former Republican owner once said that paying taxes is for poor people). Does Stantis even realize that he's slammed rich Republicans by portraying Trouble that way? Of course he doesn't, and neither do the conservatives that keep his strip alive in the comics section.
I still feel kinda bad for Stantis. Things are so terrible for the Republican party that he's still afraid to tackle real issues, so he spends a whole freakin' week on Winslow and a dog nobody's talked about for a week and a half. He spun a one day news story about an eccentric millionaire leaving more money to her dog than her own family into a week-long series that wasn't funny or insightful. What's next, a week on whether or not Barack Obama wears an American flag pin in his lapel? Oh, wait, the REAL news media is already wasting time on that story.
It's sad to think that Prickly City is just as relavant to our political discourse as the actual media. Meaning not at all.

Apparently, Scottie has a lot of detractors for his editorial cartoons, too. Interesting.

Here's a key quote. Apparently, he does the different print and online versions with his editorial cartoons, too:
" Woods was most disturbed by the editorial cartoons by Scott Stantis that were a commentary on the use of race in the campaigns. In the version of the cartoon published Tuesday, Langford and Mayor Bernard Kincaid pat candidate Patrick Cooper on the back while pasting two labels on his back, "white" and "Republican." Another version that appeared online for a time Sunday had the label "honky" on Cooper's back.
"We need to get rid of the honky business," Woods said, comparing the action to the Don Imus controversy where the shock jock was fired for making racially insensitive comments. "We need to get rid of him for making such a drawing, but the buck stops with who's in charge. Somebody had to approve this race baiting."

BREAKING NEWS!!!
This is a very special Prickly City News Flash, as it appears that Scott Stantis's job at the Birmingham News may be in jeopardy!
You see, Scott Stantis drew an editorial cartoon depicting Birmingham's mayoral candidate, Patrick Cooper, being patted on the back by the current mayor and another mayoral candidate, who place signs saying "white" and "Republican" -- and, in an earlier version of the cartoon, "honky" -- on Cooper's back.
The cartoon was not approved for publication, but it was accidentally posted online (and then removed), leading to an outcry by Birmingham's black community. One of those who spoke out was Calvin Woods, a bishop who was angry that Stantis and a host of articles in the News were apparently denouncing black leaders/politicians in the state. Woods calls the paper "racist" and "unfair."
Woods said that Stantis's cartoon was the most disturbing part of the News's coverage, calling for Stantis to be fired. "We need to get rid of him for make such a drawing," Woods declared, "but...somebody had to do this race baiting."
The cartoon has caused a protest in Birmingham, although since the cartoon was never actually published in the newspaper, I doubt that Stantis will be fired for the drawing.
What do you think? Is Scott Stantis's cartoon racist? Should he be fired?
Or should he just explain that no, he's not racist -- look! The main character in his comic strip is multiracial!

Wow, Stantis might have really stepped in it this time. In the past he's always blamed his editors for changing his strips when it caused a controversy (I don't think he's ever taken full responsibility for things like the adult web address, the Teddy Kennedy "quote," his calling Howard Dean a liar, or saying that Abramoff told people to support Dems), but this time it appears as though his editors are the ones who tried to save him - but didn't act quickly enough to catch him making an ass of himself before it went out on the online edition. Oops.
How does Stantis defend himself here? Blame it on Toby? Say "oh it's just comedy - don't take it so seriously?" After the whole Bill O'Reilly thing it'll be interesting to see Stantis try and defend himself here.
Just watch: two weeks from now Winston will slap a bumper sticker on Carmen calling her a "honky."
