Art Imitating Life

TODAY'S STRIP

At least deep down somewhere in the recesses of Stantis's empty shell-of-a-being there's a trace of a sense of humor. Today's strip shows a self-awareness that I didn't think Stantis could ever possess.

Winslow tells a terribly unfunny, hackneyed, and potentially libelous joke in front of a "Libs Give Fundraiser." The crowd is understandably stonefaced, possibly even hostile.

This is exactly how Stantis must have felt presenting his unfunny, hackneyed, and potentially libelous political cartoons in front of a hostile crowd, as detailed by The Furnace yesterday.

Congrats to Scott Stantis for finally showing a sense of humor about how terrible his work is.

The difference is that Winslow is acting completely out of character. Why would a liberal tell a joke slamming Ted Kennedy in front of a room full of liberals he's asking for money? In Stantis's case, he was being himself in front of that crowd - an unfunny Republican hack.

Right, he had to go back to Ted Kennedy for what seems to be a drunk-driving reference. We are back to Winslow being a complete idiot again. Because it wouldn't have made sense to pick a top Republican to make fun of? It's not like Bush or Cheney were ever convicted of drunk driving, have they? Or Winslow could have said their dinner was shot in the face by Cheney, possibly while drunk. Or maybe their dinner could have been run over by Paris Hilton, or Lindsay Lohan, or Nicole Richie, or Mel Gibson.

CJo, you might be right: this strip might actually be Stantis poking fun at himself, incredibly. I would never expect him to do that, but maybe the guy actually has more of a sense of humor than we thought, and it just doesn't translate to the comics page. Or maybe he's just unfunny and this was unintentionally self-referential humor.

Furnace, if I were Stantis I would say that this line is characteristic of Winslow because he is a total buffoon just like he always is (he would say it was continuation of Winslow's speech-giving gaffes -- the one where the mic is on while he's on the toilet, the one where he says "corn is dumb" while in Iowa). But since I'm not Stantis I'll say it's completely uncharacteristic of him to joke about a liberal when he himself is a liberal. By the way, good work chronicling the disaster that was Stantis's own speech.

Sacki, that "Mail Sacki" post was great. I was laughing so hard my sides ached at your response to PCNF. If it were a recurring kind of post(like the Future Goggles) that would be pretty awesome.

John, I bet Stantis scoured the tabloid newstands at his local Alabama drugstore searching for the perfect celebrity story to mock in today's strip, only to realize that it doesn't make sense for Winslow to mock celebrities when he worships them, nor would it make sense for liberals to be upset about mocking Paris Hilton or whoever. So he had to fall back on Plan B: take a cheap shot at Ted Kennedy and make a self-referential joke of sorts. It only confirms what we already knew -- Scott Stantis doesn't deserve all the time we all put into mocking this comic for the miniscule effort he puts into it.

Art imitates life, indeed.
